Many people think that dogs and cats are natural enemies. Does this mean then that you cannot have both pets in your home at the same time? Should you get worried about them killing each other?
There are actually a lot of misconceptions about dogs and cats being enemies for life. But take note that every animal is different, especially when it comes to their temperament. With that said, it is very much possible that the French bulldog that you have at home can be best friends with that of your new cat. It has a lot to do with the way you will introduce these two animals to each other.
Now, the big question is, how can you effectively do so?
Train your Frenchie to be obedient
Before you finally have your French bulldog and cat meet for the very first time, it would be helpful if you train the former how to be obedient first. Make sure that it knows how to follow your command as this will certainly reduce the risks of injury.
You can expect to face challenges as you do the obedience training, but do not get discouraged. Once you know that your Frenchie is already obedient enough to follow your rules or orders, you won’t have to worry about it chasing the cat once you make the introduction.
Choose a good location
Another thing that you have to consider before you introduce your pets with each other is the meeting place. Make sure that you do so in a calm environment. And as much as possible, there should be no other animals around to destruct your dog and cat.
Make the first meeting as brief as possible
The first meeting should be brief enough, and the main goal is just to let your pets know the presence of each other at home. To be on the safe side, it would be best to have your French bulldog on its leash. Wait a little bit until the cat gets comfortable approaching the dog.
In case the French bulldog starts barking or growling, command it to stop. Don’t forget to give it a reward if it follows your order. Otherwise, you may have to give it more obedience training.
Allow more time for the succeeding meetups
For the next meetups, you can start increasing the amount of time that you allow your Frenchie and cat spend with each other. If you observe that they are getting more comfortable, then you can give your pooch the freedom to walk around. However, if you see that there’s some sort of tension between the two animals, you should stop the meeting right away.
Feed them separately
You should never try to feed your dog and cat together because this will only cause aggression. Your French bulldog will, of course, try to dominate and scare the cat away. It may even eat the cat’s food, which could cause more problems.
The best thing that you can do is to set boundaries. Give each pet their own territory during mealtimes.
Always supervise them
During the first few meetings, it is critical that you always supervise your two pets. Remember that one accident can destroy everything. If you have to leave even just for a few minutes, you have to secure both pets, especially your Frenchie. It would be best to keep it on its leash or put it back to its kennel in such a way that it cannot attack the cat while you are away.
Be prepared to control unexpected situations
You will never know when accidents between your dog and cat may happen. It is very unlikely, especially when they are already getting along, but the possibility is still there. Therefore, you have to prepare yourself how to control such a situation.
A good way of controlling the behavior of your Frenchie is keeping it on its leash. If it gets out of hand, you can easily stop it.
Don’t hesitate to give some treats
Treats, mostly food, are a great way to reward your dog if it is behaving well. So if you see that it is trying to get along with your cat, do not hesitate to reward it. This will encourage your Frenchie to behave even better during the next meeting. You can also do the same with your cat.
Look for signs of problems
As you allow your dog and cat to meet, you have to be vigilant as well. You need to watch out for any signs of problems that may occur. If it looks like your cat is stressed out or if your pup is getting aggressive, then you have to give them a break. Separate them for 24 to 48 hours to give them time to mellow down.
How long would it take for your dog and cat to start getting along?
In reality, there is no concrete answer to this. It still depends on your pets. Some cats are more anxious than the others when they meet dogs. The same way when it comes to French bulldogs. Some of them tend to get excited when they see a cat running around a place where they thought was all theirs.
As the owner, though, there are many things that you can do to help your pets get along and live in harmony. It may test how much patience you have, but it would be worth it. As proof, look at those dogs and cats that are so close with each other that they even share the same bed. Wouldn’t it be cool if you will be able to achieve that peace between your pets too?
Can you expect a French bulldog and a cat to get along all the time?
Just like you with your friends and family members, there will be tough times. Your pets may have known each other for a few years already, but you can still expect some fights between them once in a while. The dog may still get excited and chase the cat. And so, to avoid injuries, allow each of them to have their own sanctuary.
